Rio Tinto Group (NYSE:RIO) has announced its starting of tellurium production
at its Kennecott copper operation in Utah, becoming, according to the press
release, “one of only two U.S. producers of the critical mineral used in
advanced thin film photovoltaic solar panels.” Clayton Walker, the company’s
COO, explained:
“Approximately
90 percent of the world’s tellurium resource is contained in copper ore and no
other metal has more critical mineral by-products than copper. The Kennecott
team is constantly looking for ways to extract new critical minerals to meet
emerging demand for the clean energy transition."
Cameco Corporation (NYSE:CCJ) and Orano Canada Inc. have reached
an agreement with Idemitsu Canada Resources Ltd. to acquire Idemitsu’s 7.875 percent participating
interest in the Cigar Lake Joint Venture. This increases Cameco’s ownership
stake in the Cigar Lake uranium mine in northern Saskatchewan by 4.522 percent
to 54.547 percent. Tim Gitzel, Cameco’s President and CEO, said:
"As
the world’s largest high-grade uranium mine, Cigar Lake is quite simply one of
the best and most prolific uranium producing assets on the planet. Cameco is
very pleased to increase our ownership stake in this outstanding tier-one
operation. As the operator of Cigar Lake since 2002, it’s an asset we know
incredibly well. It’s a proven, permitted and fully licenced mine in a safe and
stable jurisdiction that operates with the tremendous participation and support
of our neighbouring Indigenous partner communities."
First Majestic Silver
Corp. (NYSE:AG) has reported its unaudited interim consolidated
financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2022. Highlights
include the production of 7.2 million ounces of silver equivalent, and
quarterly revenues of $156.8 million. Keith Neumeyer, the company’s President
& CEO, said:
“Cost-cutting
measures are underway across the Company to improve profitability and help
reduce further impacts to the business. In addition, efforts to improve
efficiencies at Jerritt Canyon remain a key focus. As we reached the one-year anniversary
of the acquisition, our team has made significant investments and operating
improvements within the mines and at the processing plant. As production comes
online at the West Generator and Saval II mines in the coming months, we
anticipate improved production rates to drive costs lower."
Endeavour Silver Corp. (NYSE:EXK) has shared its financial and operating results for
the three months ended March 31, 2022. Highlights include the production of
1,314,955 ounces of silver, 8,695 ounces of gold, and a net revenue of $57.7
million for the quarter. The company’s CEO, Dan Dickson, said:
“Our
first quarter performance was strong, putting us on track to achieve our 2022
production guidance. High-grade ore at Guanacevi was a driving force and is
expected to continue throughout the balance of the year, while production at Bolanitos
remains solid. Industry-wide inflation is a growing challenge and we continue
to look for ways to mitigate its negative impact.”
