Rio Tinto
Group (NYSE:RIO) is progressing a new technology to “deliver
low-carbon steel, using sustainable biomass in place of coking coal in the
steelmaking process, in a potentially cost-effective option to cut industry
carbon emissions.” Simon Trott, Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Iron Ore, said:
"We are encouraged by early
testing results of this new process, which could provide a cost-efficient way
to produce low-carbon steel from our Pilbara iron ore.
More than 70 per cent of Rio Tinto’s
Scope 3 emissions are generated as customers process our iron ore into steel,
which is critical for urbanisation and infrastructure development as the
world’s economies decarbonise. So, while it’s still early days and there is a
lot more research and other work to do, we are keen to explore further
development of this technology."
Barrick
Gold Corporation (NYSE:GOLD) has shared its preliminary Q3 results, including
sales of 1.07 million ounces of gold and 101 million pounds of copper, as well
as preliminary Q3 production of 1.09 million ounces of gold and 100 million
pounds of copper. According to the press release, the company’s gold and copper
production were higher in Q3 than Q2, with Q4 copper production in particular
expected to be the strongest quarter of the year.
Hecla
Mining Company (NYSE:HL) has reported its preliminary production results
for Q3 2021. Highlights include silver production of 2.7 million ounces, gold
production of 42,206 ounces, silver equivalent production of 8.4 million ounces
and gold equivalent production of 113,998 ounces. Phillips S. Baker, Jr.,
President and CEO of the company, commented:
"Hecla is the United States’
largest silver miner producing 40% of all the silver mined in the U.S. With
this quarter’s performance, we are not only the largest but also demonstrate
the strength of our operations in this lower silver price environment with
approximately $10 million added to our cash balance, despite the semi-annual
interest payment made this quarter and some one-time cash transactions. Since
the beginning of 2019, we’ve added over $160 million of cash to our balance
sheet while returning approximately $30 million to common shareholders in the
form of dividend payments, in addition to increasing our investment in
operations and exploration."
