Rio Tinto Group (NYSE:RIO) plans to wind down operations and eventually close its New Zealand Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) over the next 14 months following a strategic review that showed that “the business is no longer viable given high energy costs.” Alf Barrios, the CEO of Rio Tinto Aluminium, said:

"It is not a decision we have made lightly and without significant careful consideration. It is very unfortunate we could not find a solution with our partners to secure a power price reduction aimed at making NZAS a financially viable business. We will therefore terminate the power contract and move to close the operation.”

Seabridge Gold Inc. (NYSE:SA) has begun geotechnical drilling along the route of the Mitchell Treaty Tunnels (MTT), considered a “key infrastructure component of its 100%-owned KSM gold-copper project in north western British Columbia, Canada.” The company is set to drill 4,000 meters in 10 holes this year. Rudi Fronk, the Chairman and CEO of Seabridge, explained:

"Our permit allows us to drill 40 holes, but we have limited this summer's program to only one drill rig and 10 holes to reduce the load on our camp facilities and protect our employees and contractors. We will be following a very detailed protocol to minimize risks to our workers and local Indigenous groups."

Gold Resource Corporation (NYSE American:GORO) has revealed its Q2 2020 production results from the Tucano mine in Brazil, and Topia and the Guanajuato Mine Complex (GMC) in Mexico, its three 100 percent-owned mines. The quarterly production reached 38,540 gold equivalent ounces and boasted record monthly production in June at Tucano. Company CEO Rob Henderson commented:

"In Brazil , Tucano outperformed this quarter despite the challenges of COVID-19, and in Mexico, Topia and GMC have returned to stable production following the lifting of government mandated restrictions on mining. I would like to thank our teams for delivering these strong results while prioritizing the safety and health of our people and communities and adjusting to these unprecedented times."

Steppe Gold Ltd. (TSX:STGO) has announced a $15 million CAD strategic investment from Eric Sprott. According to the press release, Steppe Gold will use the proceeds of this private placement to “advance their exploration and development projects as well as for working capital and general corporate purposes.” Matthew Wood, Executive Chairman of Steppe Gold, said:

First Majestic Silver Corp. (NYSE:AG) has announced that “all outstanding conditions required to complete the previously announced Springpole Silver Stream agreement with First Mining Gold Corp. (TSX:FF) have been fulfilled.” The agreement commits the former to purchasing “50% of the payable silver produced from the Springpole Gold Project,” and “to pay First Mining total consideration of $22.5 million in cash and shares, over three payments, for the silver stream which covers the life of the Project.”

Galiano Gold Inc. (NYSE American:GAU) has provided an update on its 2020 exploration program underway at the Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana. Galiano’s CEO Greg McCunn explained:

"Our second set of drill results from our 2020 exploration program were promising. They extend the known mineralization at Abore to the north and justify planned further drilling that will continue to test for mineralization along strike. Abore plays an important role in our objective of replacing depletion in 2020 and 2021 and the recent drill results at Abore add to the drill results from the Akwasiso pit. We expect Abore and Akwasiso to be the main sources of ore supplementing our Esaase pit in H2 2020 and through 2021 and we believe that we have shown the potential for resource expansion at both pits with our drill program."

Kaizen Discovery Inc. (TSXV:KZD) has revealed results from recent exploration diamond drilling at its 100 percent-owned Pinaya Copper-Gold Project located in the Andahuaylas-Yauri Porphyry-Skarn Belt in southeastern Peru. Highlights include the completion of “1,946 metres of diamond drilling in three holes at Pinaya, and all intersected anomalous levels of copper mineralization in altered Puno Group sedimentary rocks without intersecting the causative porphyry intrusions.” Eric Finlayson, Kaizen's interim CEO, commented:

"We are encouraged by the results received from this initial round of diamond drilling, which indicate the presence of a large unroofed porphyry system at Pinaya. We will now be bringing HPX's proprietary Typhoon™ surveying system to site, which will allow us to map the deep porphyry system and direct future drilling."

Palamina Corp. (TSXV:PA) has reported further significant channel sampling results from its Coasa Gold Project in south eastern Peru. Company President Andrew Thomson said:

Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:GOLD) has announced that Nevada Gold Mines (NGM), which it operates and owns 61.5 percent of, “has posted an exceptional performance in its first 12 months of operation.” NGM met its production and cost targets despite difficulties presented by COVID-19-related restriction, after having merged “into a unified complex under a new leadership team.” Barrick Gold’s President and CEO Mark Bristow commented:

“By removing the fences that had previously separated geologically connected assets, mines and projects that clearly belonged together could be combined into larger and more efficient operations, with substantial savings as an immediate benefit. Even more important, this merger has created a platform from where we can see a bright new future for NGM as the leader of its industry in every respect: truly a case of the best assets and the best people delivering the best returns.”

Cordoba Minerals Corp. (TSXV:CDB) has completed the acquisition of a 100 percent interest in the Alacran Copper-Gold-Silver Deposit in the Department of Cordoba, Colombia. With this recent acquisition, Cordoba now boasts a 100 percent ownership of the entire San Matias District. A press release from Monday (June 29) quotes Eric Finlayson, President and CEO of Cordoba:

“We look forward to completing pre-feasibility studies for mine development at Alacran and continuing the search for the concealed porphyry systems responsible for mineralization in the area."

Desert Gold Ventures Inc. (TSXV:DAU) has acquired the rights to a 95 percent interest in the 16 km²Sola West concession, filling a gap in its Senegal Mali Shear Zone project. Desert Gold's CEO Jared Scharf said:

"We're very pleased with the continued expansion of our SMSZ Project. Filling gaps like Sola West are important given the fact that the mineralized systems both to the northeast and southwest, along strike, likely continue onto the Sola West property package. The presence of significant artisanal mining and strong gold-in-soil anomalies further augment the perspectivity of Sola West. Weather and time permitting, we plan to drill test some of these targets during our current drill program.”

Camino Minerals Corporation (TSXV:COR) has acquired 100 percent ownership interest in the Los Chapitos copper discovery in Peru, through the completion of the exercise of its option agreement with Minas Andinas SA on the Los Chapitos property. Jay Chmelauskas, the company’s President & CEO, explained:

"Our Los Chapitos property is a new discovery in the copper sector that gained recognition during the first exploration drill campaign initiated in 2017 and 2018. Camino has since advanced its systematic exploration at Chapitos with geochemistry mapping, geophysics and permitting, leading us to our next drill campaign planned for September. Drilling will be focussed on expansion of known mantos and the discovery of potentially new copper mantos. New copper discoveries are needed to shore up the supply demand dislocation between depleting mine supply and new copper demand from an electrifying global economy. We believe that the Los Chapitos discovery has the potential to host a significant copper deposit, and Camino has now secured 100% ownership."
